Congratulations to our very own Project Director Mary Jo Tavormina on being this year’s winner of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) Max Beberman Award!
The Max Beberman Mathematics Educator Award honors one outstanding person each year who has made significant contributions to the field of mathematics education through research, curriculum design, or teacher training.
In her years as an educator, both in the classroom and in leadership roles in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and at UIC, Mary Jo has touched the lives of countless students, teachers, and administrators while improving the quality of mathematics education and teacher training at schools and districts throughout the Chicagoland area. In addition to her role as Project Director of the Metro Chicago Mathematics Initiative, Mary Jo is also a collaborator for the Elementary Math Specialists Project with the University of Chicago and DePaul University and the Principal Investigator for the Big Shoulders Fund-UIC Mathematics Initiative. Prior to her time at UIC, she was the Director of Mathematics for the Chicago Public Schools.
Everyone at MCMI is thrilled to see Mary Jo receive this honor.
