Virtual Book Studies

MCMI is offering three Virtual Book Studies throughout the 2021–2022 school year. Participation is FREE, and ISBE Professional Development hours will be available for those who attend all of a book’s sessions.


Math Fact Fluency Book Image

Virtual Book Study: Math Fact Fluency by Jenny Bay-Williams (K–8)

Developing student’s fluency and flexibility with math facts is essential and challenging. Participants will explore the research based approaches offered by the author of this book. This book is available at  ASCD or NCTM. ISBE Professional Development hours will be available for those that attend all sessions.

Building Powerful Numeracy Image

Virtual Book Study: Building Powerful Numeracy in Middle-School and High School by Pamela Weber Harris (6–12)

Informed by research and classroom experience, this book details an instructional approach focused on developing number sense and understanding in higher math for all students. This book is available at Heineman.  ISBE Professional Development hours will be available for those that attend all sessions.

Teaching Math to Multilingual Students Image

Virtual Book Study: Teaching Math to Multilingual Students Grade K–8 by Kathryn B. Chval (K–8)

It’s time to re-imagine what’s possible and celebrate the brilliance multilingual learners bring to today’s classrooms. Innovative teaching strategies can position these learners as leaders in mathematics. Based on best practices and the authors’ years of research, this guide offers practical approaches that equip grades K–8 teachers to draw on the strengths of multilingual learners, partner with their families, and position these learners for success.
