Positioning Multilingual Learners and Their Families for Success in K–8 Mathematics

Join us for a day of interactive learning led by Dr. Kathryn Chval, Dean of the College of Education and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Illinois.

Participants will identify different factors that influence the participation of multilingual learners, discuss messages and biases related to multilingual learners, learn concepts related to positioning, and much more.

Dr. Kathryn Chval is the Dean of the College of Education and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). Her commitment to educational solutions in education is rooted in her early experiences in under-resourced schools in the U.S. Her research focuses on effective preparation models and support structures for mathematics teachers, effective elementary mathematics teaching for multilingual learners, and curriculum standards and policies. Her leadership, research, and service have been recognized with several awards, including the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award, Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators Early Career Award, and National Science Foundation Director’s Award for Program Management Excellence.

Registration for this event will open to teachers and administrators participating in MCMI services for the 2023–24 school year on April 1, 2024 and will open to the general public on June 1, 2024. Your registration includes lunch, a copy of Dr. Chval’s book, and 6 ISBE PD credit hours.
