CASPIR

(UIC) received funding from the National Science Foundation to launch a project titled Developing Organizational Capacity to Improve K-8 Mathematics Teaching and Learning. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Alison Castro Superfine, who is Professor of Mathematics Education and Learning Sciences at UIC. The goal of this 4 year project is to co-develop and implement a multi-component professional development model that spans across three levels (teacher, school and district), in four K-8 school districts in Cook County. The professional development model is particularly designed to improve teachers’, teacher leaders’ and school administrators’ understandings of effective math teaching and learning in ways that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The model is also designed to enhance the organizational capacities of schools and districts to support such improvements in mathematics teaching and learning over time. A key feature of this project is that researchers, professional developers, and district and school personnel collaborate to co-develop and implement the professional development from district- through teacher-levels, and engage in iterative cycles of co-development, implementation, and revision to productively adapt the model to changing district contexts and conditions.
